Lean 5S tool and VWM

What are the 5’s?

Explain term 5S

The above fig. shows 5s  stands for Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke. The words are Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke, which when translated mean Sort, Set in Order, shining (Cleaning), Standardize and Sustain, respectively.
  • Sort helps to remove all unneeded and unwanted items: only what is needed stays.
  • Set establishes locations and quantities needed for efficient operation.
  • Shine represent cleaning through inspection.
  • Standardize implements visual displays and controls.
  • Sustain helps to keep the organization effort in place through training and total employee involvement.
5S involves assessing everything present in a space, removing what's unnecessary or unwanted things (waste), organizing things logically, performing housekeeping tasks, and keeping this cycle going. Plan, Organize, clean, repeat. The 5S concept is applicable for many industry types or business natures, including service sectors. 5S is an effective technique that can improve housekeeping, environmental performance, as well as safety standards in a systematic way. Global markets are continuously changing and demanding product of high quality and low cost. In India, the survival and the growth of small-scale industry largely depends on its ability to innovate, improve operational efficiency, and increase productivity. Many of the everyday problems could be solved through adoption of this practice. Many businesses have been trying to adopt new business initiative to stay alive in the new competitive marketplace. Lean manufacturing is one of these initiatives that focuses on the cost reduction by eliminating wastes (non-value-added activities).

What is VWM?

Visual management is key to a successful 5S implementation. The goal of visual management is to make the situation clear simply by looking at it with as little observation or time as possible. In any place, be it an organisation, a housing colony, a township or city there should be enough signs and symbols to guide any individual. These signs and symbols are called visuals.A visual workplace is a safe, clean, neat, arrangement of the workplace where anybody can identify anything, anywhere, anytime without any delay and without anybody’s help. This because visuals lay the path towards an organised work environment.
